"Training is more than just sit and stay.  It's also learning about dog behavior and the canine-human relationship.  Once the owner has been initiated into this way of thinking, we are ready to train the dog.  First, you must get a sense of the dog's temperament.  Dogs, like people, have their own personalities and need to be treated individually.  A brash, tough dog must be trained much differently than a shy, timid dog. " ~  Shelby Marlo New Art of Dog Training"

I hope you will enjoy my blog I've written below about my own personal "family"; My dogs Gracie and Kelly. My cats Roy Rogers and Tutu and my bird Albert.  These are my musings about them.  For those of you who have written emails to any of them - they work for food!!!  Marlo

Relieved from duty - A job well done!

March 1 2006.
Recently I worked with a great family whose dog, Mr. PD. was losing his battle with Cancer. He had always been "on duty" protecting and serving those he loved.  He had been a former military dog and had that very familiar "military" stand about him.  Always caring for others before himself.  As he was growing weaker and weaker, Mr. PD had a very rough time "going off duty".  He just wanted to keep protecting and serving. The family called me in to help on this. They saw the struggle he was going through and that he needed rest.  So I suggested they give him a "commendation" which would acknowledge him for all his good works in serving their family.  They jumped right into the creative endeavor of this.  The certificate was made of beautiful parchment paper. They gave Mr. PD a purple heart and told him he was "relieved of duty" for a job well done.  I was with them when they presented him with this commendation.  He sniffed the paper and as it was read to him he seemed to really understand.  He looked up at his family and wagged his tail.  He visibly relaxed and we all laughed.  From that moment on he rested and never went back on "duty".  He got to spend his last days sitting in the sun by the pool.  Many attended his "going away" party - he got a whole steak to himself.  He quietly left this his body with those he loved soon after.  He was fully off duty.

Mollie

Mollie and I welcome you to our website.

Mollie is my wonderful Walker Hound dog, saved from the Georgia floods.  She has given me 16 years of joy and happiness.  She has also been a fantastic teacher for me.  I learned that a dog at any age can learn new tricks.  Mollie was 15 when she learned to "crawl".  She enjoyed learning her "back from death routine".  She would play dead and then I'd pretend to resuscitate her and after the 3rd chest compression she'd spring back to life!! She loved performing for "cookies" and would not work for anything BUT food.  I'm sure all of you out there can relate with your own pets.
Mollie died in February of 2006.  We had a 16th birthday party for her.  She got tons of emails and calls from her friends. She got any and all food she wanted that day - 2 McDonalds cheeseburgers, Chinese food, cakes and cookies.  She left her body peacefully surrounded by my other pets and her closest friends.
I had taught Mollie to "go to her mark" which is what a person or dog must be able to do when they are on a movie set and preparing for a scene.  I felt so happy I'd taught her that because I know she is now on her "mark" in life.
